How to adapt the web to mobile devices
With the data in hand, the growth of the mobile Internet has not slowed down in recent years. Only between the beginning of 2012 and the middle of 2013, Internet access through smartphones has increased from 11.1 to 17.5%.
The most important thing is that this consumption continues
to increase. Boosting the mobile version of a website will become, if it is not
already, an absolute priority for all Internet sites. What's more, you can no
longer launch any marketing campaign
without a mobile phone, at the risk of failing miserably.
Given this situation, you can choose different solutions:
create a responsive design, generate a mobile web site or develop a mobile
application, transforming our web.
What is responsive design ?
The design Responsive is to apply a design to a specific web
page that can be adapted to all kinds of resolutions, whether of a mobile,
tablet, screens widescreen or whatever the required resolution.
It is a simpler way of offering the same service to all
types of devices with notable cost savings, redirects or duplication of content
on the web. Wikipedia defines responsive design as the design and development
philosophy whose objective is to adapt the appearance of web pages to the
device that is being used to display them.
The most important attributes to consider in responsive web
design are:
1. The CSS.
2. Percentages
better than pixels.
3. Selection
of images.
How to adapt a website to mobile?
When we are going to adapt a web page to the navigation that
is done through our phones, there are several alternatives that will be more or
less feasible depending on the development capacity of the programmers who
execute the project and the money available. .
The steps are the following:
1. If you
have enough money, the optimal option is to hire the services of companies that
can carry out the development satisfactorily according to our needs.
2. If, on
the contrary, you prefer to reduce costs and have enough knowledge to work with
CSS, you can do it yourself. The work is not easy, since all the components
have to be adapted to the responsive system , but it is possible.
3. If we
have an application developed in WordPress , you can choose different plugins
that adapt the web. It often makes work much easier, but you also have to take
into account the degree of development we want for our application.
When not to use responsive ?
There are times when responsive design is not enough to
adapt web content to mobile phones. Sometimes it is an option and sometimes it
is not. This may be because some of the content is not adaptable to small
resolutions or because the web is too old to be responsive . Sometimes, also,
this generates frustration in the user by not being able to obtain the
information or service that he is requesting.
The factors that can cause responsive design to be rejected
are:
1. The
peculiarities of the web : not always the webs are ideal to be adapted to the
mobile. It may be the case where failures occur because the components of the
new design fail at a lower resolution.
2. Specific
content : when trying to get phone or tablet users to carry out a specific
activity, it is advisable to create a website with a specific design.
3. E-commerce
: in the case of having an electronic commerce platform, it is strongly
recommended not to use responsive designand to develop a specific design for
the platform.
When to use responsive ?
If one is not in any of the cases mentioned in the previous
point, the most reasonable thing is to develop a responsive design project for
the following reasons:
1. The cost
of developing a responsive project is usually more affordable than any other
alternative. Much more, of course, if you need to hire the services of an
external company.
2. Weather.
3. Consistency.
4. Conversion.
