Scuf Impact - Review - PlayStation 4
In this special review we will not talk about a new title, with its strengths and weaknesses, but we will talk about something that could help you considerably in dealing with the new upcoming titles: the new Scuf home controller , Impact ; but to favor the less accustomed to the field we will make a very brief introduction.
The world of gaming and eSport is now in clear expansion,
and with it also the connected universe of accessories to help gamers to give
their best in the game.
Universe where Scuf Gaming is a net colossus, thanks to its
offer in the field of controllers, with which it has greatly facilitated the
life of the players by allowing a more reactive, complete and comfortable
control in battle, and for long gaming sessions.
Having said that, let's move on from the premises to the
facts and let's analyze Scuf Impact, hoping to give you those two tips necessary
to decide if it will be the right controller for you.
We also remind you that, as with any hardware and device
review, the evaluation can fluctuate compared to others, having a strong
objective component , essential for evaluating the product in the best possible
way, but also a minimal subjective part , which we hope will be accepted as
such. and not harshly criticized at all.
But let's get to the point now, and let's kick off the
review.
What an Impact
Scuf, after having largely conquered the PlayStation market
with its Infinity PRO , has slowly had to give way to competitors, who have
begun to present well-made joypad offers on the bench, just think of Razer's
Raiju and its success.
From the need to relaunch on the market, and from Scuf's
mature awareness of having to give life to a product designed for, and by, the
players , Impact was born , designed totally from scratch by the English house,
and our impression, once taken in hand the controller is: What an Impact!
Impact proves to be totally reborn and different from its
brother, both from the ergonomic side, both from the technical side but also as
regards the materials used; in short, a real revolution for the PlayStation
side at Scuf.
Many are the innovations introduced, starting from a total
restyling, with a more ergonomic shape, the addition of two rear vanes and the
mini USB output, requested loudly by the players.
So let's go step by step to analyze all the new features of
Impact.
From the Community for the Community
As previously mentioned, there are many innovations
introduced by Impact, but one above all made us and many players jump for joy:
the new Cable Retention System .
The choice to keep a fixed cable was the 'retro' solution
that made the fortune of the latest pro controllers, and therefore Scuf has
decided, exclusively for Impact, to introduce a mini USB port which, especially
combined with the original Scuf cable, helps to avoid those possible and
annoying lag usually inherent to the wireless connection .
This shrewdness was strongly desired by the community ,
which greatly pointed it out to Scuf, and which therefore brings Impact to a
higher level of reactivity than Infinity Pro, but perhaps, and here we have to
move the first criticism, not to the same level as some other controllers.
In fact, the difference gap is not excessive, but it is
discreetly turned upside down that a Scuf-branded controller does not reach,
even if for a short time, the performance of a controller, such as Raiju by
Razer, which is born with the integrated cable, but which at the Actual offers
better results at lower cost.
Gap that is slightly felt in wireless mode, but which,
unlike the Infinity Pro, does not increase as the controller deteriorates .
Partial solution to the problem can be found by adjusting
the spring preload for the rear keys, but this goes to very little filing the
already, perhaps, imperceptible lack, considering the controller connected by
cable.
Another great, and unprecedented, novelty introduced by Scuf
on Impact for its users is the new body , imported more than broadly by the
Elite Controller, which makes the grip decidedly more ergonomic and natural ,
aligning itself with most of the competitors.
Wider, which fits comfortably in the palm of the hand, the
new shell not only guarantees more comfort, but has allowed the developers to
insert two additional rear blades , another flagship of Impact, in such a way
as to reproduce all four keys. and allow the player to never take their fingers
off the analogs.
The body itself is a huge step forward compared to the
Infinity Pro, but that perhaps comes a bit late, given that most of the
controllers have adapted to what has actually proved to be the most successful
and comfortable form. .
The additional palettes behind it might seem, at first
sight, a useless addition, since in most FPS only two palettes are sufficient,
but which, with hindsight, turn out to be a really good choice, going to expand
the field of applicability of Impact .
The four palettes in fact come back immensely useful in all
those titles where the key combos really make a difference, such as fighting
games, and which therefore also requires more keys pressed at the same time, a
move that with simply two palettes is not so obvious.
In any case, the paddles are completely removable and
remappable , allowing total configuration flexibility to the player, allowing
you to move any button between the rear controls, also allowing you to change
the number according to your need.
Unfortunately, although the problem can be solved in a
rather simple way, the design of the four rear controls leads, in case the
external vanes are pressed too hard, to press also the analogues (R3 and L3 to
be clear), while the internal vanes are not immediately reachable if you don't
fit the grip slightly, and these little flaws are sometimes uncomfortable.
We immediately allay your doubts by confirming that,
unfortunately, you cannot move the R and L keys in the rear vanes , another
small but annoying defect.
In any case, the addition of two additional palettes, also
in view of upcoming titles to be released, is a more than apt choice, going to
greatly expand the usability of Impact.
New controller, new technique
There are many innovations that strike the eye when looking
at Impact, but not all of them are visible from the outside.
A problem that plagued Infinty Pro, and of which the
community has strongly complained, was the fragility of the controllers, which
tended to deteriorate quickly over time and withstand little shocks and
possible falls; problem to which Scuf wanted to remedy by reinventing the
technique of making Impact.
The materials used to make Impact are of much higher quality
, both in terms of resistance and in terms of workmanship.
Being the structure totally made from scratch, and no longer
based on the classic Sony controller, it guarantees Impact superior
compactness, being able to withstand the majority of falls, except the most
catastrophic of course.
The selected materials complete the picture ensuring more
durability over time , both as regards the body and the analogs.
Another huge step forward therefore for Scuf, which goes to
satisfy what popular discontent that it pointed to as fragile its products, by
proposing on the market a robust competitor to rely on.
An important novelty in the project is the removal of all
the screws that connected the rear paddles and the dorsal levers , now replaced
by a convenient interlocking system that allows easier and faster interchangeability,
useful both in terms of play and in case of replacement.
The battery does not vary from the classic supplied on
PlayStation controllers, perhaps creating some problems in long gaming
sessions, also given the presence of the light band on the front pad
(PlaySation 4 Pro controller style), which is a fascinating detail
aesthetically, but all effective perhaps avoidable.
